Staffin Stores is a hugely popular and well-run shop at the heart of the Staffin community. The large and spacious store, which is part of Talla Stafainn, Staffin Community Hall, has everything that locals and visitors need.

There is a range of quality meat, dairy and bakery produce, fresh fruit and veg, confectionery and soft drinks in the well-stocked shop, which is open six days a week. Staffin Stores is fully licensed and sells tobacco. Greeting cards, wrapping paper, gifts, souvenirs, postcards and stamps are also on sale.

Daily newspapers can be purchased from 11.30am each day and can be ordered by local residents. A range of magazines are also available.There is a hot drinks machine for takeaway teas and coffees while sandwiches, pies and sausage rolls are also sold.

The shop also has an industrial laundrette with washing machines and tumblers driers. It costs £5 per wash and 50 pence for drying, tokens can be purchased at the till. Coal, logs and kindling materials are also available. Staffin Stores also provides an in-store ATM machine so customers can access cash for their own convenience, as the nearest machine is currently 17 miles away in Portree.


The Staffin Community Hall Association bought the shop from private ownership almost 10 years ago and it is now run as a social enterprise for the benefit of the community.It has been a remarkable success since 2006 and provides an excellent service locally, with public toilets, a book stall and as a source of local employment. To date, £83,000 worth of profits have been donated to the association from the shop. That has enabled major improvements such as improvements to the hall, erection of a wind turbine, the significant expansion of the shop car park and exciting plans for a new gym.

Opening times: Monday to Saturday, all year round, 9am to 6pm.

Directions: from Portree, Staffin Stores is 17 miles north on the A855 road. You travel down the brae into Staffin’s 40 mph speed limit and a 1/2 of a mile north, you take a left-turn at the shop, which is well-signposted, just before you leave the restricted speed stretch. From Uig or Kilmuir, the shop is only 10 miles away over the spectacular single-track Bealach/Quiraing road or about 16 miles around the north end, respectively. It is first on the right as you enter the 40mph speed zone.
